Truthfulness

The truth means to be genuine, honest, and sincere. It means to be actual, reliable, and able to be trusted. The bible sets a standard of honesty and goodness that we are to follow; these are character traits of a Christian. Truthfulness is a fruit that the spirit will bring out of you if you are obedient. Truthfulness is a Christ like characteristic that we must imitate.

Let’s read some scriptural references to truthfulness:

Ps.33:4

“4 for the word of the Lord holds true,
And we can trust everything he does.”

In this scriptural reference we can see that Gods word is the truth and that we can trust everything that he does. If we are to be Christ like then people should be able to say the same things about us. It is very possible as a human to be trustworthy and honest.

Matt.22:16

“16 They sent some of their disciples, along with the supporters of Herod, to meet with him. “Teacher,” they said, “We know how honest you are. You teach the way of God truthfully. You are impartial and don’t play favorites.”

As you can read in this reference Jesus had his father’s characteristics and was an honest teacher. He taught the way of truthfulness. He was unbiased and others could trust what he said. This is the Christ like qualities that we should be imitating today…

To be truthful means that you are honest in your facts, you appearance is not fake, and your claims are valid. People lie about who they are, what they do, how they live; the list goes on and on. When people do this it is called being fake. God is not fake, God is real, he is the one source of all truth and his son was even given the title “The Truth”…

Let us look at the reference to Christ as the truth:

John 14:6

“6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”

Just like this verse says Jesus is the truth…And without the truth you cannot even come to the father!

Proverbs 12:19 tells us that the truth never changes. Neither should we, we should be honest at all times; we have nothing to hide from anyone because we are new creatures in Christ-our pasts were erased. 2Thess.2:15 and Rev. 2:6 tells us we are to hold on to the truth, which means that we are to hold on to Christ, it IS a matter of life and death!

Now that we know that Jesus is the truth and that we are to live in his truth and be trustworthy in our lives lets look at some basic principles of truthfulness…

Biblical Truths:

The truth can make you uncomfortable………Isa. 30:10-11
Jesus is the foundation of truth………Jn.1:1
The Holy Spirit is the source for truth……….Jn. 15:26
We are to stand up for the truth………Num. 13:30-32
Truth is tested through suffering……….Job 14:22
We are not to think that we know it all!.........Jn. 46-49

It is very important for us to be truthful for many reasons, let us look at a verse that clearly states a VERY important reason why:

Matt. 5:33

Teaching about Vows

33 “You have also heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not break your vows; you must carry out the vows you make to the Lord.’* 34 But I say, do not make any vows! Do not say, ‘By heaven!’ because heaven is God’s throne. 35 And do not say, ‘By the earth!’ because the earth is his footstool. And do not say, ‘By Jerusalem!’ for Jerusalem is the city of the great King. 36 Do not even say, ‘By my head!’ for you can’t turn one hair white or black. 37 Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is from the evil one.”

In this particular verse the bible is referring to making a pledge or “vow”, breaking the vow that you made would be dishonest, and untrustworthy. To not live up to your word or promise makes you an untruthful person. The bible says not to make promises because you have no power or control to fulfill them, only God can. We must let our yes be yes and our no be no because anything else would be untruthful…

Read Mk. 4:24-25

24 Then he added, “Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given—and you will receive even more. 25 to those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.”

There are answers to any questions about honesty that we may need to know in the scripture. Just like the bible defines honesty and even gives us scriptural references pertaining to it, it also gives us wisdom, wise advise to know how determine what is honest and what is not. We must study the bible and understand its wisdom so that we are not easily swayed by untruthfulness.

The bible clearly tells us that the key to knowing what is true and what is false is to listen closely to biblical wisdom and teaching, it tells us the more we listen the more we learn. That is were we get our defense from…
