THE LORD'S SUPPER
The Lord's Supper was commanded and instituted by Jesus himself.
We are becoming more and more distant in today's society from the original
traditions of the earthly church.
This study is to help show the importance of the Lord's supper and the part
that it plays in worship.
1. THE LORD'S SUPPER IN THE BIBLE IS DESCRIBES AS:
a. SHARING OF COMMUNION ( 1 Cor 10:16)
We are sharing in the symbolic reenactment of Christ's last meal, and
sacrifice, the bread and wine being representative of his body given and
the blood shed for the new covenant.
b. BREAKING OF BREAD ( Acts 2:42,46)
* Sharing of a meal together ( literally bread and wine)
* Commemorative of Christ's last supper with the Apostles
c. THE LORD'S SUPPER ( 1 Cor 11:20)
A supper Jesus instituted for all Christians to participate in until he returns
d. THE EUCHARIST ( Luke 22:17,19)
* Giving thanks
* A mandate to share with our brothers and sisters
NOTE: Luke 22:19 states to DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME, or to remember him!
2. SPECIAL FEATURES CONCERNING TE LORD'S SUPPER:
a. INSTITUTED BY JESUS ( Matt 26:26-29)
Jesus is the one who established this ritual and said to do so to remember him
b. COMMEMORATIVE OF CHRIST ( Luke 22:19,20)
* Commemorative of his death
* Commemorative of his sacrifice
c. INTRODUCTORY TO A NEW COVENANT ( Matt 26:28)
Symbolizes our new covenant through his sacrifice
d. MEANS OF CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP ( Acts 2:42, 46)
* Its a bonding experience for believers
* A way to fellowship
e. MEMORIAL FEAST ( 1 Cor 11:23-26)
* The Lord's Supper is a memorial feast
* We are to participate in this memorial until he returns
* It announces his death , acknowledges his sacrifice, until he returns
f. INCONSISTENT WITH DEMON FELLOWSHIP ( 1 Cor 10:19-22)
* Participation is honoring Christ and is inconsistent with demonic behavior
* Its a memorial service for saints not for sinners
g. PREPARATION FOR IT IS REQUIRED ( 1 Cor 11:27-34)
* You must participate worthily by:
1. Being thoughtfully in Christ
2. Remembering him and repentant
3. Examining yourself and repenting
4. Considerate others involved ( doing so together as a body)
h. SPIRITUALITY EXPLAINED ( John 6:26-58)
* Must understand and have been obedient to the gospel ( saved)
* Must understand the spirituality of what the action means
* Must acknowledge his sacrifice and be humbled by it
Now that you understand the Lord's Supper and its part in the church,
the next step is to participate in a worthily manner, meaning have a clear
conscious before God and a spiritual state of mind.
The Lord's Supper can be a wonderful experience if it is done so
decently and in order!
