Laying Hands

Laying hands is not just some magical act in church that people can play games with.
Laying hands is a very sacred and important ceremony within the church.

1. IN THE OLD TESTAMENT LAYING HANDS WAS USED FOR:

A. BLESSING A PERSON ( Gen 48:14,20)
Jacob used the custom of laying hands to pass on a blessing to the next generation.
Laying hands is meant to bestow blessings on someone else, it was also used in
other ways which we will later find out...

B. TRANSFERENCE OF GUILT ( Lev 4:14-15)
The elders of the church laid hands on the offering-showing their approval of the
worthy sacrifice and removal of guilt from the person who offered it, then it was up
to the priest to intercede for that person- so they literally acted on God's behalf in
judging what was a worthy sacrifice to be accepted.

C. SETTING APART FOR SERVICE ( Num 8:10-11)
Laying hands on potential leadership set them apart for service to God,
it was a way to dedicate them to God.

D. INAUGURATION OF A SUCCESSOR ( Num 27:18-23)
This was also done to show a blessing, or dedication of leadership once
one had died, or for whatever reason stepped down

2. IN THE NEW TESTAMENT LAYING HANDS WAS USED FOR:

A. BLESSINGS ( Matt 19:13-15)
Jesus used laying hands to bless the children that were brought to him.
This was a custom in the Old Testament also.
So we can say with confidence one reason to lay hands on someone is to BLESS THEM.

B. HEALING ( Matt 9:18)
The synagogue leader asked Jesus to lay hands on his dead daughter.
Jesus did so and the girl rose from the dead.
The bible clearly tells us in James 5:14 that if any in our fellowship ( or body)
are sick to call upon the elders to pray over us and anoint us with oil, it will heal the sick.
So it is safe to say that laying hands is a act performed in faith healing ministry- God being
the final authority on who is healed- he allows us to intercede on others behalf though,
a symbolic typology of the Old Testament and a PRIESTS ability to transfer guilt on others
behalf, same with disease- or healing needs, a representative prays for you...

C. ORDAINING DEACONS AND MINISTERS ( Acts 6:6)
The Apostles and Elders laid hands on the newly elected deacons or ministers.
This was also done in the Old Testament ( Num 8:10-11) So it is
definatly appropriate to lay hands when dedicating someone or thing unto the Lord as his.
( 1 Tim 4:14) Timothy was elected into leadership the same way.

D. SENDING OUT MISSIONARIES ( Commissioning Others) ( Acts 13:2-3)
Barnabas and Saul were special selected by the Holy Spirit for a special work.
Missionaries ( Apostles) are special soldiers in God's army and most missionaries
are martyred for their service unto the Lord.
Laying hands and blessing them for this "SPECIAL" task is totally appropriate and needed!

E. BESTOWING THE HOLY SPIRIT ( Acts 8:17-18)
Peter laid hands on the believers and they received the Holy Spirit.
When Paul laid hands ( Acts 19:6) the Holy Spirit fell on them.
When they did this in both cases were Christians NOT UNBELIEVERS.
( Same as the day of Pentecost- fell on believers)
It also clearly states in Acts 2:38 that upon salvation the Holy Spirit is given as a gift.
SO what was the Holy Spirit that fell on the believers in Acts 8 and 19?
THIS WAS A SPECIAL OUTPOURING OF THE SPIRIT ( Like Acts 13).
When Paul as given a special task or mission by God he was also given special PORTIONS
of the Holy Spirit to complete the tasks. The Holy Spirit is in charge and bestows gifts, etc.
as he deems appropriate. We call this a "Impartation" for a Ministry work, this IS NOT
something man can just pass around freely. IT IS SOMETHING THAT GOD HIMSELF
AND THE HOLY SPIRIT ARE IN CHARGE OF!

Spiritual matters are not to be taken lightly, and laying hands is a very spiritual matter,
it is to be used with reverence and respect for God and the work of the Holy Spirit,
that is why it is only done by church leadership!
